During June, Chicago Glass donated its services to The Friends of Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital, where all funds raised go towards items not funded by the NHS for the patients within Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital.
We were honoured to be approached by Natalie Tiddy from the Charity to see if we could assist them with the restoration of a glass ornament signed by Michael David and Kit Karbler, which had been kindly donated to them.
Our Operations Sales Director, Tom Baker, said: “It’s a little different to the type of glass we are normally asked to restore, but we wanted to help this good cause”
Our skilled glass restorer was able to use his extensive experience in rebuilding damaged glass, ordinarily applied to restoring chips and shells in glass building façades, balustrade panels and windows to restore this beautiful ornament to its original state.
Natalie Tiddy, from the Friends of Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital charity, emailed us this testimonial after the restoration:
"The Friends of Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital has a small shop located at St. Thomas’ Hospital , managed and staffed completely by volunteers. All the profits made go back to the Hospital Trust to purchase extra comforts and amenities for patients which are not funded by the NHS.
In addition to hospital memorabilia, greetings cards, silver jewellery and gift merchandise, we also sell good quality decorative items which have been donated. Recently a very beautiful glass sculpture by Michael David & Kit Karbler was donated. Unfortunately it had a number of small chips around the edges and we felt it was too damaged to sell in such a state. Scrolling through the internet we identified Chicago Glass as a possible company to approach. We were overjoyed to receive an immediate response from Tom Baker, Operations Sales Director, who advised us that not only could the item be restored but that the company would not make a charge given our Registered Charity status.
Needless to say we accepted this very generous offer with alacrity and a date for the work was agreed. Another advantage of this company is that the restoration work is carried out where the client is based which was a real bonus given that the item for restoration was very heavy. Both Jimmy, the specialist glass restorer and Jenna, the Administrative Assistant, arrived at the hospital and the work was completed in record time leaving a beautifully smooth finish, the skill of such an undertaking is truly superb and the piece returned to its former glory as can be seen from the pictures.
Not only did Chicago Glass freely give their time and expertise they also gave us photographs of the item and very valuable advice on the best sales channel for this piece of art glass to achieve the maximum profit for our Charity. It is genuinely an amazing organisation demonstrating excellent specialist skills with customer care a priority."
If you would like to make a donation to The Friends of Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital, this should be sent to The Friends of Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital, Friends Office, Gassiot House, St. Thomas’ Hospital, London, SE1 7EH.
