When you type in 'How to remove scratches in glass' into a search engine, you may be looking to remove just one light scratch or multiple scratches. The scratch may be:

  • distracting you every time you look through the window,
  • general wear and tear scratches on a glass table,
  • multiple scratches from a dog to your patio door,
  • accidental damage following a window cleaner visit,
  • caused by builders accidentally damaging the glass whilst rendering the outside of your property, or
  • you could be working on a largescale building project or site, with multiple tradesmen in and out, and you've been left with accidental scratches to newly installed windows.

The results that appear on the first page of your search are most likely to be for glass scratch remover products/kits, "how to" videos and articles advising you on ways to remove scratches using homemade remedies.  You may even come across an ad or article like this one mentioning professional glass polishers.  There are some articles (of course not ours!) that state even professional companies cannot repair deep scratches.

Some of you may be tempted to try out some of the homemade remedies or a DIY kit (please read further down before you try this); but what if you have deep scratches, multiple scratches, scratches over multiple windows or on the large glass facade of a building? How do you remove the scratches then, would toothpaste really work?

When I first joined the company, like many people, I was not aware that there are companies out there that can remove unsightly scratches from glass panels.  Before joining, I would have just had them replaced, which I now know is unnesssary. Many of our customers are repeat customers, or referrals from within the trade alongside some that have found us online.

So what is the truth. Can you get scratches out of glass?

The short answer is Yes.  99% of the time, scratches on glass can be removed by our specialist glass restoration technicians, including deep scratches.  Our Team are always open and honest with you about the results that can be achieved.  On ocassions, we advise people that replacing the glass would be the best solution. Most of the 1% of cases where we cannot help, are caused by sandpaper damage around the edge of the framework or where the glass panels are smaller than an A4 piece of paper.

Do homemade remedies, such as toothpaste, baking powder or nail varnish really remove scratches?

I haven’t personally tested any of these, but my colleagues tell me that they can work for certain types of scratches but only where the scratch has not removed any of the glass molecules. Where scratches have left an indent, which you can feel with your finger, homemade remedies is not the solution to the problem. We definitely do not send our team out with nail varnish and baking powder mixes!

What about the DIY kits you can buy?

There are some sites that sell DIY glass scratch removal kits, but this is not something we would recommend.  We often get calls after people have tried using a DIY kit and the glass surface has become distorted.  This means that we are unable to repair the damage.  We could have repaired the original damage had the DIY kit not been used and we were called in first.

How do Chicago Glass repair scratches in the glass then?

Chicago Glass have a team of technicians who have been trained at our Head Office, before going out on-site and have on the job training with experienced technicians.  Only then after this period do we let them go out on their own. Our technicians use a series of abrasive discs to grind the defect, until the scratch disappears. The area is then polished, rectifying the displaced and abraded glass surface to leave a clear and consistent finish, which is to the BSI Standard for newly installed glass.

Why not just replace the glass?

This route can be time-consuming, which in turn could create a costly delays to any project deadlines, or leaving unsightly glass at your establishment, possibly detracting a potential customer. We are pleased to be able to offer an alternative solution to those facing this situation, and we believe we offer this at a fair price compared to replacing the damaged glass.  Our service is also helping to decrease the amount of glass that goes into landfills, which takes more than 1 million years to decompose.
