Retail Glass Repairs
Retail, Shopfronts and Commercial
The most common problem with glass in-situ is caused by graffiti etched into the surface by vandals using glasscutters, carbide probes or spark plugs. It is either random swirling scratches or is concentrated to show words (some of which are offensive), symbols or letters - football club initials, or gang tags for example. This damage can be removed by polishing the glass in-situ with a minimum of distortion. Other damages can be caused by pushchairs, bicycles or diamond rings on doors or counters which can also be removed using the same system.
Stone Damaged, Cracked or Chipped Glass
This can also be repaired on-site using UV cured resins injected into the damage to produce a smooth, clear finish that is structurally stable and reduces the risk of the damage spreading. Chicago Glass can supply technicians to solve this problem on-site, thus avoiding expensive replacement of glass. This work can be carried out overnight or at weekends if access is difficult during opening hours.
Acid Graffiti
Acid graffiti is a new phenomena to the UK, where vandals use hydrochloric acid, mixed with either shoe polish or acetone, in a shoe cleaning dispenser, creating a much wider band of graffiti - sometimes coloured which is both etched into the glass and forms a hard crust on the surface. Using a two-stage process, the system removes, abrasively, the hard crust and polishes out the etched surface with a minimum of distortion, leaving a smooth, clear surface. The system has been used extensively in the USA over the past three years where the problem is endemic.
